While the Trump administration promised to impose new sanctions on North Korea for the intercontinental ballistic missile, ICBM, launch, North Korean state television stated that its weaponry "meets the goal of the completion of the rocket weaponry system development set by the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)".

Vassily Nebenzia told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday that Russian Federation is "deeply disappointed" at North Korea's long-range ballistic missile launch Tuesday, stressing that Moscow doesn't support Pyongyang "becoming a nuclear power".

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry also raised "serious" concern about North Korea's new missile launch that violated the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

The missile firing comes a week after United States President Donald Trump said North Korea fell under the list of countries that backs terrorism.

Lavrov pointed to joint U.S.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of attempting to provoke North Korea, saying the Washington is trying to make Pyongyang take "extreme measures". The United States, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea as a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, denies any such intention.

The launch came after more than two months without a North Korean nuclear or missile test, but the country tested a pair of Hwasong-14s in July and it has repeatedly ignored global efforts to deter such "provocations" through sanctions.

He reiterated the China-Russia proposal for North Korea to suspend all nuclear and missile tests and the US and South Korea to suspend all military exercises.

Lavrov, who spoke while visiting Minsk, the capital of Belarus, wondered if the USA was attempting to destroy North Korea by making its leader Kim Jong-un "snap".

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Wednesday called for other countries to sever all ties with Pyongyang, including cutting trade links and expelling North Korean workers.

In his remarks on Thursday, Lavrov said Haley's call for the world to isolate North Korea was wrong.

"Naturally we are discussing with our European colleagues whether it's necessary to further increase the diplomatic pressure", he said.
