Top congressional Democrats canceled a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday after the president tweeted that he didn't see the possibility of a deal to avert a government shutdown happening between the two parties. They're weak on crime.

The Run-UpThe podcast that makes sense of the most delirious stretch of the 2016 campaign. Though Democratic leaders have not explicitly said a solution for Dreamers needs to be attached to a government funding measure, several prominent Democratic lawmakers have said they will vote against any funding measure that doesn't include a solution for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients. "Now it's not even talk".

On December 8, the US government will run out of money (though the deadline may be temporarily extended to later in the month).

Democrats, however, are confident they hold leverage because their votes are necessary in the Senate next week to fund the government, and they believe Republicans would take the blame if a shutdown occurred.

Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Schumer hope to use the negotiations to help undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children and to provide financing for the Children's Health Insurance Program, whose funding lapsed at the end of September.

Despite all those pending issues, however, the focus on Capitol Hill this week has been on Republicans' tax bill, which passed a key committee vote in the Senate Tuesday and will likely be on the Senate floor later this week.

How this increases the potential for a shutdown: Behind the scenes, most Senate Republicans are just as sick of Trump as Democrats are. The president seemed to see little risk in a holiday government shutdown.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), seated to the left of Pelosi's empty chair, said, "I think it's regrettable that our Democratic colleagues in the leadership chose not to join us today".

Pelosi responded to Trump's comments on Twitter, saying that his "verbal abuse will no longer be tolerated". Ryan, McConnell, and Mattis were positioned on other ends of the otherwise empty table. In it, Mr. Trump previewed the scheduled meeting with "Chuck and Nancy" but sounded grim about chances for an agreement. Trump said that was "very special". But he also has used recent events, particularly the special election for Senate in Alabama, as a bellwether for the mood of his most ardent voters.

"We don't have any time to waste in addressing the issues that confront us, so we're going to continue to negotiate with Republican leaders who may be interested in reaching a bipartisan agreement", according to their statement. This is a battle the Democrats can win for themselves and for those who want to find a way to beat back any tougher restrictions on immigration.

While it did not pose any threat to U.S. territories, a spokesman for the Pentagon said: "Our commitment to the defence of our allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan, in the face of these threats, remains ironclad".

"Nobody wins that way", he added.
