Facebook's Facial Recognition Algorithms Have Just Reached a New Level

Facebook Facial Recognition Wants to Manage Your Identity Facebook uses AI to improve how blind can 'see' images

The new Facebook facial recognition feature is created to detect when users appear in other people's photos, even if they're not tagged, and notify them so they can manage the situation. Although this is the first official announcement that the company is moving more intensely towards facial technology - and perhaps farther away from previous forms of individual security as it skews more towards control over one's presence - facial recognition has always been a part of Facebook's platform.

The website will also notify you if someone used your face for their profile picture. Facebook Photo Review gives users more control over their photos and prevents people's pictures from misuse on Facebook.

Lack of control over the use of facial recognition algorithms on user images prompted a lawsuit against Facebook in 2015. After that, it will generate a string of numbers or templates to compare with other photos or videos that are uploaded to Facebook's systems by someone else.

First of all, you need to change the "Tag suggestions" which is by default to no one.

In other words, Facebook users might still appear in other users' photos and not be aware of it, depending on the audience limitations and whether or not the people are friends on Facebook.

Soon, Facebook will release the on/off switch for individual features that use facial recognition technology, which by default will be set to "off" and will remain that way until users decide to change it. "The template is the reference we use to recognize you in photos".

"If you're in a photo and are part of the audience for that post, we'll notify you, even if you haven't been tagged", said Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, Facebook's director of applied machine learning in a blogpost.

Facebook wants to make it easier for people to "manage their identity" on the social network with the help of Photo Review, a new tool that taps facial recognition technology. The new Facebook Photo Review will roll out globally in the next few weeks, except for Canada and Europe, where facial recognition tech would violate privacy laws.

Facebook on Tuesday added a way for people to know when their pictures are posted anywhere on the leading social network.
