Like Apple, Google To Focus On 64-Bit Apps

Prime Video app for Android TV launched by Amazon Like Apple, Google To Focus On 64-Bit Apps

New apps will have to meet this requirement in August 2018 and existing apps will have to do this from November 2018. Think of it as somewhat like a badge of authenticity for Android apps.

The Android Developers Blog, says, "For apps that use native libraries, 64-bit code typically offers significantly better performance, with additional registers and new instructions". But, it now seems that Google is going the Apple way of implementing the new standard for all the apps. Not only this, they are also expected to improve the performance and stability of the apps. Starting August 2019, Google will end support for 32-bit applications and will transition to a 64-bit ecosystem. Apps can still include 32-bit support after the 2019 deadline, but native 64-bit libraries must be included as well.

Android product manager Edward Cunningham announced the impending changes in a blog December 19 that said Google was releasing the information so developers have enough time to comply with them.

The post, which is aimed at Android developers, also details new API level requirements. In fact, the Cupertino giant kept its word by dropping support for 32-bit apps with the launch of iOS 11.

To an extend, the less download rate of the Android wear app can be associated with the poor performance of Android Wear devices on market. While most of the new Android devices come with 64-bit compatibility, it will be a good time you move to a device that runs one.

Existing apps not receiving updates will remain unaffected, and developers will continue to be able to build apps for older Android versions.

Thankfully, especially for consumers, it appears as though the two companies are starting to work together, which might have now lead to Amazon releasing a Prime Video app for Android TV...

Developers now have to follow new rules to keep on publishing apps on the Play Store.

Early in the coming year, Play will begin adding "a small amount of security metadata" to each APK submitted for further authentication, and will require no effort on the part of the developer.
