Excited to make a return to the tennis court in Abu Dhabi, the former world number one said she was honoured to become the first woman to compete in the previously male-only event.

Williams last played professionally last January at the Australian Open, winning her 23rd Grand Slam while pregnant.

Williams, who married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian last month, said in a statement that she was "delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi".

United Arab Emirates media have sprung a surprise with reports that Serena Williams would return to tennis at the upcoming Abu Dhabi exhibition tournament.

The 2018 Australian Open is slated to be held from January 15 and will run till January 28.

Duterte served as Davao mayor for many years before being elected to the presidency last year. The reason behind the fire is unknown and investigation is underway.

The Abu Dhabi event, in its 10th year and regularly a men's pre-season competition, is making a huge exception in bringing back Williams.

Brian Lott, Chief Communications Officer of Mubadala, the title sponsor of the tournament, could not contain the exuberant news, saying on the tournament's website, "For the tennis fans in UAE, having Serena here as part of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship weekend is a thrilling opportunity to see even more world-class tennis".

Djokovic, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, has not played competitively since his quarterfinal loss in July to Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon because of an elbow injury.

Ostapenko, 20, broke through with a stunning French Open title, and she will take on Serena Williams for the first time.
