HP is recalling lithium-ion batteries for its notebook computers and mobile workstations after learning they may pose burn and fire hazards.

Customers have so far reported eight instances of the batteries overheating, melting or charring, with three reports of property damage worth a combined $4,500 and one report of a first-degree hand burn, according to the agency's website.

Batteries sold as replacement or accessories for the HP "XBook Studio G4" mobile workstation are also named in the commission report.

The machines affected represent 0.1% of HP's computers sold globally between December 2015 and December 2017.

The website also provides instructions on how to initiate the validation utility to check their battery and what to download if their battery is included in the recall.

For more information, call HP toll-free at 888-202-4320 from 8 a.m.to 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or go online at www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 or www.hp.com and click "Recalls".

This HP recall was conducted voluntarily by the company under the CPSC's Fast Track Recall process, which expedites product recalls so consumers can get the service and support they need as quickly as possible. HP says it "strongly recommends" using this mode if you're affected.

If you have an HP laptop, you'll want to see if your model is mentioned in the following laptop battery recall notice issued by HP. When enabled on an affected system, the battery will be discharged and then can't be charged (at least without disabling the safety mode).

In addition, the company has pushed a BIOS update that puts affected batteries in "Battery Safety Mode", which allows the laptops to continue working without their batteries by connecting to an HP power adaptor.
