WHO Says Video Games Are A Health Hazard, Gaming Industry Vehemently Disagrees

Gaming addiction listed as mental health disorder by WHO ESA Strongly Encourages World Health Organization To Reconsider Its Gaming Addiction Classification
Steve Townsend | 06 January, 2018, 00:42

According to the World Health Organization, the gaming disorder is diagnosed when video or digital game playing on or offline begins to impact everyday life.

The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe.

The last version of the ICD was completed in 1992, with the new guide due to be published in 2018.

Its 11th International Classification of Diseases (ICD) will include the condition "gaming disorder".

Jimmy Iovine May Leave Apple in August

The research - looking at children aged eight to 18 - found that boys spent longer playing video games than girls.

Internet gaming disorder is "totally different" from the gaming disorder proposed by World Health Organization, said Ferguson, and this "reflects the confusion". By contrast, the World Health Organization version is built around whether gaming interferes with real life activities - for example, if your gaming means you're not doing homework or brushing your teeth - and so it is "perhaps a little bit better", said Ferguson. Some of the criticisms that they give include that the description "leans too heavily on substance use and gambling criteria", "the low quality of the research base" and the lack of consensus about the symptoms of "problematic gaming". Gentile hopes parents will pay more attention. All of the aforementioned could be applied to a number of compulsive behaviours.

Vladimir went on to add how only a small percentage of people will suffer from this disorder: "Most people who play video games don't have a disorder, just like most people who drink alcohol don't have a disorder either".

The ESA is basically the trade group that has major clout and investment in the video game industry. WHO's Hartlsaid that "use of the internet, computers, smartphones and other electronic devices has dramatically increased over recent decades", and while there are clear benefits, "health problems as a result of excessive use have also been documented".
