Srinagar:Three bodies were recovered and one person was found alive under snow on Saturday after avalanches swept away two sumo vehicles at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.
The driver Zahoor Ahmad Khan s/o Maqsood Ahmad Khan r/o Chetarkote, Karnah, jumped in the nick of time while as the vehicle was swept away by the avalanche, taking with it the six persons travelling in it.
Both the incidents occurred near the Sadhna Top area of the district.
Three people were pulled out alive from the avalanche site, he added.
A few passengers managed to survive as the rescue operations progressed in full swing with rescue teams comprising of the police, Army, Mountain Rescue and State Disaster Response Force. A 10-year-old boy and one of the two Beacon vehicle personnel, attached to the Border Roads Organisation, had been found injured on Friday, and they, too, were sent to hospital for treatment.
A police officer confirmed to IANS: "Engineer Mangla Prasad Singh was killed". A Beacon officer's body was found on Friday evening, he said.
Officials said that the sub-zero temperatures and looming possibility of further avalanches make rescue operations hard.
