Amid pandemonium over the triple talaq bill, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for Friday. The bill is still pending in the Upper House and its fate will be decided in the forthcoming budget session beginning January 29. It accused the Congress of double standards and insisted that the bill be debated in the Rajya Sabha so that it can "expose the Congress' hypocrisy" for opposing it in the upper house after supporting it in the Lok Sabha, where it sailed through last week since the government has a big majority.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.N. Ananthkumar blamed the Congress for stalling the crucial Legislation and alleged that the Opposition came up with a new excuse everyday to defer its passage.

It has said that the Congress is against the bill. "There is anger among people on this issue".

The government introduced in the Lok Sabha the Constitutional Amendment Bill that would give the National Commission for Backward Classes the same powers that the SC and ST Commission have.

The bill, which criminalizes instant talaq among the Muslim community, is likely to be deferred to the next parliament session as the opposition build up pressure on sending the bill to a select committee.

The Congress and BJP had issued whips to all their MPs in the Rajya Sabha to be present in the house today just in case the bill was taken up.

"Till the time a woman's husband is in jail who is going to pay for the family maintenance?"

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today amid uproar by opposition without any decision on triple talaq bill. "This Bill is against the rights of Muslim women", he said, while maintaining that the entire House was united in its opposition to the practice of triple talaq.

"They are not thinking about ensuring justice to the Muslim sisters". The bill makes giving triple talaq punishable by up to three years in jail.
