Climate Changes Change Sex Of Great Barrier Reef Turtles

Conservationists concerned at growing number of female sea turtles on Australia's Great Barrier Reef Climate change is turning baby green sea turtles female

Conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States along with Australian scientists from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, the study found that male green turtles were rapidly declining for around two decades, reports Xinhua news agency.

The so-called pivotal temperature, which produces a 50/50 gender split, can be passed down from parent to offspring, but the range which would result in all-male or all-female varies by only a few degrees, scientists said. When eggs hatch from sand that averaged 29ºC (84ºF) over the incubation period, they produce a 50-50 mix of males and females.

Warming seas are turning male turtles into females, scientists have discovered.

A new study reveals increasing temperatures are turning green turtle populations nearly completely female in the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). A few up or down into the temperature can affect the natural balance of this species.

Unlike anatomical exams at nesting beaches used to determine the sex of individual hatchlings, the new study used an innovative combination of endocrinology and genetics to assess the sex of hundreds of turtles across a large foraging ground.

But those in the warmer, northern Great Barrier Reef were "extremely female-biased", at 99.1 percent female among juveniles and 99.8 percent for those between juveniles and adults.

Analysis of the turtles in the northern and southern parts of the Great Barrier Reef showed 99 per cent of young sea turtles nesting on warmer northern beaches were female, while the cooler southern beaches showed a more moderate sex bias with 69 per cent female species. Notwithstanding influencing sex result of the turtles, higher temperatures additionally increment death rate sums turtle posterity.

"Knowing what the sex ratios in the adult breeding population are today and what they might look like 5, 10 and 20 years from now when these young turtles grow up and become adults is going to be incredibly valuable".

World Wildlife Fund Australia head Dermot O'Gorman told the Guardian Australia that environmental change was taking a quiet toll on creatures.

For many reptiles, sex is determined not by chromosomes, but by the temperature at which their eggs are incubated. The new study has given some significant information about the current situation of the green sea turtles, informed lead author Dr. Michael Jensen, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
