Two thirds of people who try cigarettes go on to become daily smokers a new study has found
11 January, 2018, 03:10
Researchers found that around 7 in 10 of those who said they'd ever tried a cigarette went on to smoke daily.
The team analysed data from the United Kingdom, the US, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
Data from eight surveys - with information on more than 215,000 people - were included for analysis.
At least 60% of people who try cigarettes once go on to become daily smokers, even if it's temporary, research suggests.
Considering the high conversion rate found across the surveys, the researchers conclude that at least some of the decline in smoking prevalence observed over the last 20 years could be attributed to a reduction in experimentation by adolescents.
Lead researcher Professor Peter Hajek, from Queen Mary University of London, said: "This is the first time that the remarkable hold that cigarettes can establish after a single experience has been documented from such a large set of data". Among those, 68.9% said they had gone on to smoke every day.
Have you ever just smoked a cigarette to "try" it?
He said: It is striking that very few non-smokers who try e-cigarettes become daily vapers, while such a large proportion of non-smokers who try conventional cigarettes become daily smokers.
The authors also said there were questions about the accuracy of people's recall of their smoking history.
In 2016, 15.5% of the adults from the United Kingdom smoked, down from 19.9% in 2010, according to the office for National Statistics.
In the year 2010, smoker's percentage in the United Kingdom was 19.
While it is natural to see some variation between surveys, it is interesting to note that United Kingdom respondents were consistently more likely to say they developed a habit compared to those from the other three countries.
Based on survey results from 4 different countries - including the United Kingdom - the findings highlight how addictive tobacco cigarettes are, and the importance of ensuring that stop smoking services are made available to help people quit.
At this public health minister Steve Brine says,"Britain is a world leader in tobacco control, and thanks to our tough action smoking rates in England are at an all-time low". She stated that the government is reluctant to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers even though both the public and retailers are in support of this, notes the BBC.
One was that the surveys had yielded different results for the proportions who had progressed to becoming daily smokers - from 52% in one in the U.S. to 82% in one in the United Kingdom - which meant the 68.9% figure was an estimate, as a weighted average of the figures.
Smoking rates in the United Kingdom have been in long-term decline.
