Mr Assange was accused of raping two women in Sweden in 2010 and was subsequently arrested in London. The Ecuadorean government has since insisted that "nothing has happened". Assange and his website have also leaked information from Guantanamo Bay, private emails belonging to 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and emails from the Democratic National Committee.

A United Nations panel concluded in 2016 that Mr Assange was under arbitrary detention.

In June 2012, Assange fled to the Ecuadorian embassy to avoid an extradition warrant over allegations of sexual misconduct and has remained there ever since.

However, British and Swedish authorities at the time refused to back down from their plans to arrest the WikiLeaks founder. But the British government has maintained he must face justice in United Kingdom courts over his breach of bail conditions.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's name has appeared in an Ecuadorian government database of citizen identification numbers, fuelling speculation that he may have received citizenship from the Andean country.

The US secret grand jury investigating Assange and WikiLeaks was impaneled under the Obama administration and remains in session under Trump.

Ms Espinosa said Ecuador had granted Assange citizenship while it looked for a "dignified" solution to his situation with Britain.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo has described WikiLeaks as "a non-state hostile intelligence service", vowing that his agency is "working to take down that threat to the United States".

What could happen to Julian Assange now? "He hasn't been apprehended because he's inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London".

The US has never laid charges or sought his arrest for the publication of classified documents relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on the WikiLeaks website. Manning was subsequently pardoned by Obama, but not before being subjected to abuse tantamount to torture in military prison.

Others see him as a criminal who undermined the security of the West by exposing secrets.

A statement by Assange's legal team said: "The UN ruling, issued nearly two years ago, is crystal clear in its language".

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "The government of Ecuador recently requested diplomatic status for Assange here in the UK".
