Ruth Davidson urges Nicola Sturgeon to 'stop cutting hospital beds'

They describe the compromise of safety at hospitals as "intolerable" and the NHS as "severely and chronically underfunding", while also publicly apologising to patients for failing to "fulfil our pledge for a safe efficient service".

The latest figures from Public Health England (PHE) show the number of flu patients admitted to hospital were two-and-a-half times higher than at the same time past year.

The statistics also reveal that more than 5,000 people were forced to wait more than an hour to be seen in A&E departments in England in the first week of 2018.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said the BMA - the trade union for doctors - had previously said it was "fed up with this government's spin, and patients are too".

Consultant Subramanian Kumaran, of Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is among those putting their names to the letter. The Department of Health and Social Care in England said there was a "great deal of pressure" on A&E departments, but added that plans were in place to improve social care to free up hospital places as well as for the biggest expansion in doctor training places in the history of the NHS.

It says: "We feel compelled to speak out in support of our hardworking and dedicated nursing, medical and allied health professional colleagues and for the very serious concerns we have for the safety of our patients".

Ms Sturgeon said levels of winter flu were now four times the level recorded in the same week of previous year.

Leading health figures from Sefton Council, NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS Southport and Formby CCG have joined together to offer expert advice to residents on how they can best avoid catching the flu in the coming months.

Our experience at the front line is that these plans have failed to deliver anywhere near what was needed.

Now trade between the two countries is around 5 billion United States dollars, of which three billions is for exports. Netanyahu finally held up his drawing, Suchard looked and said, "I was completely wrong".

"I said earlier this week, the health secretary said in the chamber, that we apologise unreservedly not just at winter but at any time of the year to any patient who waits longer than they should do for hospital treatment or doesn't get the standard of treatment that they have a right to expect and I do that again, unequivocally, today".

This includes the additional "escalation beds" which are used when the hospital is struggling to cope with demand.

As you will know a number of scientific publications have shown that crowded Emergency Departments are risky for patients.

"Many patients attending the emergency department will also undergo tests and start treatment while they wait to admitted or discharged". Numerous trusts we work in are in similar positions.

An 80-year-old man spent 13 hours in a Scottish NHS hospital corridor on New Year's Day "like an old cow waiting to die", his son has said.

We have known for a number of years that recruitment of staff to Emergency Departments has been challenging.

Despite this she insisted the NHS was "coping admirably" as she claimed the health service in Scotland was the best in the UK. They have asked for infrastructure and strategies to reduce the overcrowding in the A&E departments.

Ms Davidson added: "As it stands, the SNP has cut bed numbers, and cut social care places".
