'Bad deal': Trump cancels London trip for embassy opening, blames Obama

The president's tweets came after British newspapers ran stories announcing the cancellation of his London trip, which the news articles attributed to concerns about protests against the US leader.

Johnson, a Trump appointee, also said the new embassy was entirely paid for by the sale of other London properties and "did not cost the US taxpayer a cent".

President Donald Trump has once again cancelled a trip to London, this time offering as a reason President Barack Obama made a bad real estate deal by moving the USA embassy in the United Kingdom into a bigger building.

He said the new building in Vauxhall, south London, was in an "off location", adding: "Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!"

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will now step in for the launch of the new embassy site, which will open to staff on January 16.

The $1 billion construction project overlooking the River Thames began in November 2013 and was wholly funded by the sale of other US properties in London. Many Londoners have made it clear that Donald Trump is not welcome here while he is pursuing such a divisive agenda.

Some British lawmakers questioned whether Trump would be welcome after he re-tweeted videos from a far-right British group and criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan following a terror attack a year ago.

Downing Street said no date has been confirmed for any visit by Trump and that the opening of the USA embassy "is a matter for the US". The sale was made because the British government wanted to list the building as one of historical importance, which would have made renovations and a potential sale more hard to do.

The decision to move the embassy from its historic location in London's Grosvenor Square was made under President George W. Bush and announced in October 2008.

"Trump's racism must be opposed by a global movement Join us on 17 March as cities around the world mark UN Anti-Racism Day", tweeted Stand Up To Racism (SUTR).

Around 4 per cent of Britons - 2.5 million people - said they would protest a visit, according to a poll previous year.

Khan noted Trump's cancellation "reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place". Last month, Ambassador Woody Johnson, who was appointed by Trump, called it a "bargain". "The U.S.is one of our oldest and most valued allies and our strong partnership will endure", May's spokesman Blain said.
