"This image has now been removed from all H&M channels and we apologize to anyone this may have offended".

The retailer used a black child to model a sweatshirt with the slogan "coolest monkey in the jungle".

Dressed in the party's signature red, members of the Julius Malema-led Economic Freedom Fighters protested an H&M advertisement featuring a black boy wearing a hoodie with the words, "coolest monkey in the jungle".

Video footage showed activists trashing displays, kicking over clothes rails and shoving mannequins.

H&M said despite the incident being "accidental in nature", it still took it seriously and understood the upset and discomfort it had caused.

Protesters angered by a "racist" H&M advertisement ransacked several of the Swedish fashion group's South African stores on Saturday.

"That... nonsense of a clothing store is now facing consequences for its racism", deputy leader Floyd Shivambu wrote on Twitter.

"At the East Rand Mall the protesters managed to enter the shop and stole several items", he said.

In one instance officers were forced to use rubber bullet to break up the protests. "If they are not going to close the shop, they must just know we are going to be here nearly every day, starting from today", he said.

He proudly tweeted out pictures of the damage done to H&M stores.

H&M addressed the situation in South Africa this afternoon, saying it was closing stores in the area and that store staffs had nothing to do with its aforementioned "poor judgement".

She said the hoodie was "one of hundreds of outfits my son has modelled", and urged people to "stop crying wolf all the time".

But many have already pledged to boycott the store, as The Weekend - a Canadian R'n'B star who produced menswear collections with the chain - said he was cutting ties with the company.
