Around 300 women attended a local football game in the Saudi city of Jiddah on Friday, in a historic first for the deeply conservative Islamic nation.

Women in Saudi Arabia for the first time entered a sports stadium to watch a soccer match in Jeddah.

On Thursday, Jeddah held Saudi Arabia's first vehicle exhibition aimed at women, a few months after Saudi Arabia announced it would grant them the right to drive.

The women entered the King Abdullah Stadium through a special gate, with female security guards wearing orange vests searching the visitors at the entrance.

A football match on Saturday in the capital Riyadh will also be welcoming women fans.

Ahead of the game on Friday, clubs took to Twitter to encourage women to attend, with some even offering the traditional abaya robe in team colors.

"I am very proud to be a witness of this massive change". "Some thought it wouldn't be very safe or organised", said Swick, who attended the game with her Saudi husband and son, and her American mother.

"The recent reforms are part of a gradual process of modernization under Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, who is attempting to make the Kingdom more moderate", wrote BBC.

However, strict guardianship laws are still in place, which forbid women from marrying without a male relative's content, traveling overseas and securing a passport.

It follows a series of reforms meant to modernise the country.

The Saudi Arabian government also plans to allow women to drive, starting in June.

Both teams sold female shirts at discount prices to attract women supporters, Saudi media reported.

In 2015, a Saudi woman who tried to attend a football game in Jeddah was arrested after local media said she was spotted by security officers "deliberately disguised" in pants, a long-sleeve top, a hat and sunglasses to avoid detection.
