A Cheap and Easy Blood Test Could Catch Cancer Early

Researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore developed the test, known as CancerSEEK, in a study involving more than 1,000 patients.

There are already early screening tests for breast and bowel cancer, but Professor Gibbs said the blood test would help diagnose more people at risk. Is that good enough for screening large numbers of people? "That could save their life", said study author Nickolas Papadopoulos in an interview with NPR.

However, Turner described the paper as "a step along the way to a possible blood test to screen for cancer, and the data presented is convincing from a technical perspective on the blood test". The Johns Hopkins group and others have shown that so-called liquid biopsies of blood-borne tumor DNA can reveal, for example, whether a patient's cancer should respond to a specific drug. "The extent of basic diseases - bosom, lung, colorectal - distinguished is again not as high as other, rarer tumors".

In 83 percent of cases the CancerSEEK test, which has a proposed cost of $500, could pinpoint the area where the cancer was anatomically located.

"Because the same gene mutations drive multiple tumor types, liquid biopsies based on genomic analysis alone generally can not identify the anatomical location of the primary tumor", the authors write.

"The sensitivity of the test in stage I cancer is quite low, about 40 per cent, and even with stage I and II combined it appears to be around 60 per cent".

Specifically, the researchers evaluated levels of eight proteins and the presence of mutations in 2,001 genomic positions to detect signs of cancer.

They said "liquid biopsy" - developed in the U.S. - would be a game changer in the fight against cancer, and hoped it could be widely available within a few years.

On average the test found 70 per cent of the cancers. The team developed a supervised machine learning approach to predict the underlying cancer type in patients with positive test results. The accuracy range was better - 69 percent to 98 percent - when it came to five cancers that now have no widely used screening test, the scientists reported in a new study.

Maitra and others point to caveats, however.

CancerSEEK's true effectiveness is now being trialled in people who have not been diagnosed with cancer.

Cure rates would be far higher, treatment far cheaper and patients would be less likely to have disfiguring surgery.

Nowadays, many cancers are treatable - if we can find a way to detect them early on. Detection and localization of surgically resectable cancers with a multi-analyte blood test.

The researchers say the findings are an exciting first step.

"I'm enormously excited", he said. "A test does not have to be flawless to be useful", Papadopoulos says.

Dr Gert Attard, team leader in the Centre for Evolution and Cancer at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, and consultant medical oncologist at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, told the BBC: "This is of massive potential". And the test hasn't even been tried on patients who have yet to develop symptoms.
