Top seed Rafa Nadal was rattled by a feisty challenge from Diego Schwartzman but held firm to fend off the diminutive Argentine 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-3 and reach his 10th Australian Open quarter-final on Sunday.

Kostyuk entered the tournament ranked No. 521 and opened with a win over 25th-seeded Peng Shuai, becoming youngest player to win main-draw matches at the Australian Open since Martina Hingis in 1996. "I think you can tell my confidence is pretty good at the moment". "I'm very excited to just play, to go out there and compete".

Nadal battled back in the third set, taking a 4-1 lead before restoring his overall lead with an ace.

One break point was enough for Nadal to clinch the third set, after fending off the two opportunities he faced.

The fourth set followed a similar pattern, with Schwartzman unable to get much going with the ball in hand, allowing Nadal to pounce with an early break.

With this victory, Nadal secured the ATP ranking's top spot after the tournament, regardless of his results.

Rafael Nadal has warned that playing in severe heat can be a "little bit unsafe for health" after he eased into the last 16 of the Australian Open with an emphatic straight-sets victory over Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia on another day of sweltering conditions in Melbourne.

Mertens will play fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina who beat qualifier Denisa Allertova 6-3, 6-0.

"It was a good test but at the same time I prefer to win in two hours than in four", Nadal said.

"I had many chances in the start of every set, having a lot of break points, and I couldn't win those points", Schwartzman said.

"I know it's going to be incredibly tough, but I'm not going to think about it right now".

On day five of the Australian Open, there was only one match that local fans had their eye on: Friday evening's round three clash between hometown hero Nick Kyrgios and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Cilic blew one of them by spraying a crosscourt shot wide but made no mistake on the second, hammering a huge first serve down the "T" and picking off the return with a straightforward forehand victor.

Kyle Edmund became the first British man other than Andy Murray to make the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in 38 years when he defeated Andreas Seppi 6-7 (4) 7-5 6-2 6-3. His game has evolved and as Nadal said, he has the ability to dictate terms from the baseline.

Since enjoying a memorable run to the semi-finals of the US Open a year ago, Carreno Busta has experienced a dip in form and fortunes.

"I'm a big believer in life, and what I've learned is that learning (something that) in 10 minutes would take someone (by themselves) 10 years is a very effective way to maximize the short window that you get in this sport", he said.

"He got off to a good start", Edmund said.
