Vice President said Monday that the USA will open its embassy in Jerusalem next year, accelerating the administration's plans for the move after President Trump recognized Jerusalem as 's capital.

Vice President Mike Pence said the U.S. Embassy would move to Jerusalem by no later than the end of next year during an address to Israel's parliament.

Israeli Arab members are escorted by security out as U.S. Vice President Mike Pence speaks in Israel's parliament in Jerusalem, Monday, Jan. 22, 2018.

Abbas and other Palestinian leaders refused to meet Pence, making his visit a rare one by a high-ranking USA official not to include talks with the Palestinians. Previous estimates had been the move would take three or four years.

With that in mind, Trump has made a decision to recognize reality, and in doing so force the Palestinians to confront it as well. "This is a long overdue step to advance the peace process.today, we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel's capital".

Such accords are usually only agreed with recognized states. It is also the right thing to do.

The United States now has its embassy in Tel Aviv, like other nations with embassies in Israel. Pence reportedly asked el-Sissi and King Abdullah to contact the Palestinians on the U.S.' behalf to ask them to restart peace talks with Israel, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg.

He said he had raised his concerns for some time that such a decision on Jerusalem "does not come as a result of a comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict".

The US move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital broke with decades of global consensus that the city's status should be settled as part of a two-state peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. "And Israel has no greater friend than the United States of America", he said.

Members of the Joint List coalition of Arab parties had pledged to boycott the Pence speech in protest at the December 6 decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967 and later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community. Multiple shop owners in the Old City's Muslim Quarter and the surrounding streets told The Jerusalem Post that they are joining the general strike in the West Bank, in protest against Pence's visit.
