SpaceX conducts Falcon Heavy static fire test

Musk has repeatedly downplayed expectations for the rocket's first flight, saying past year, "There's a lot of risk associated with Falcon Heavy, a real good chance that that vehicle does not make it to orbit".

The Falcon Heavy is essentially three of SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9 vehicles strapped together.

Musk has, for month, attempted to lower expectations about the launch, emphasizing that it was a test. "Excitement on launch day guaranteed, one way or another", he wrote in an Instagram post early this month. Come for the cloud plumes, stay for the sound. That follows years of delays as the spacecraft proved more hard to build than expected and SpaceX grappled with failures of its Falcon 9 rocket, upon which the Falcon Heavy is based.

SpaceX now is preparing a Falcon 9 for launch from the Air Force station to boost a communications station for satellite operator SES into orbit.

The payload for the Heavy's first flight: Musk's personal Tesla Roadster, a cherry red sports vehicle that will be mounted in the rocket's nose cone. Of course, were NASA to save on launches, Congress could take that money and use it elsewhere, says Henry Hertzfeld, who studies space policy at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He adds that the launch fees that government agencies pay tend to be negotiated in long-term contracts, based on payload needs, and don't necessarily align with prices published on a company website.

Because the maiden flight of any rocket carries a higher degree of risk, the Falcon Heavy will not take up a meaningful payload when it finally launches.

These engines were brought to life for the first time at Cape Canaveral this morning in what is known as a static fire test.

SpaceX has fired up its newest, biggest rocket in a critical launch pad test.

Aboard the flight will be a whimsical, cross-promotional payload for Musk - a cherry red Roadster built by his other business, Tesla.

'At 2,500 tons of thrust, equal to 18 Boeing 747 aircraft at full throttle, it will be the most powerful rocket in the world by a factor of two.

"Because of the commonality between Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy we're able to spread the overhead across both vehicles", Musk said at a news conference in 2011.

"Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn't blow up on ascent", Musk, the famed space enthusiast and Internet tycoon, said on Twitter last month.

'Will have double thrust of next largest rocket. The outside core boosters will attempt landings back at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station while the center stage is expected to land on an offshore drone ship on its initial flight. SpaceX had fueled the rocket before, but then stood down for undisclosed reasons.

'I love that rocket so much'. Musk has previously said that if the rocket simply makes it far enough after launching to avoid damage to the pad, he would consider that a win.
