Nintendo is shutting down 'Miitomo' social network/game on May 9th

Miitomo Closing in May 2018 Nintendo's killing its first mobile app after just two years

The company announced last night that it will shut down Miitomo, the first app Nintendo ever released, in May of this year, giving users just a few more months before the app is gone for good.

The sale of Miitomo coins ended yesterday, but Nintendo is offering 2000 coins and 5 game tickets every day as a login bonus, so anyone still using the app can still use the shop or play Miitomo Drop.

Nintendo launched Miitomo back in March 2016, and while the free-to-play app was more of a quirky social experience than a full-fledged game, it was a moment that marked the company's arrival on the mobile scene.

Mittomo coins, the game's in-app currency, will no longer be sold as of today, while the rest of the game will be fully available until May 9th. Instead, we got a "social app" rather than a game, one that involved creating customizable avatars called Miis, playing mini-games, and responding to questions and sharing the answers with friends.

The app even managed to make it into the App Store's top 10 highest grossing title list.

Nintendo has put up an official notice of closure on its Miitomo landing page, and the service will be shut down in its entirety on May 9. Are you going to miss it? Notably, users will need to save "Miifotos" to their device if they wish to keep them, and saving Mii characters will require linking to a Nintendo account or backing up to a QR code for use on the 3DS or Wii U. Also, Miitomo-themed items used in your Nintendo Account or in Super Mario Run will not be visible after Miitomo ends.

"Thank you to all our dedicated users for contributing to Miitomo", it said in a statement.
