United Kingdom politician's claim of Russian attacks 'worthy of Monty Python'

The comments came in response to a warning by Mr Williamson that Russian Federation could cause many thousands of deaths by launching an attack against the country's infrastructure and energy supply.

"The plan for the Russians won't be for landing craft to appear in the South Bay in Scarborough, and off Brighton Beach", Defense Minister Gavin Williamson, tipped as a possible successor to May, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson made the unusually alarmist comments in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, in which he also said Russian Federation was spying on the UK's critical infrastructure.

Russia's General Igor Konashenkov, a senior defence official, compared Williamson's claim to something out of "Monty Python".

"If we lost our interconnectors, which would be something that we know that they are looking at, there would be three million homes without electricity".

He told the Express & Star: "Russian submarine activity in the Atlantic has been at its highest since the Cold War".

"Russia is getting bolder and this is partly due to massive investment in military and security spending".

"More worrying is that the Russians are investing heavily in their intelligence capabilities increasing the threat of espionage and clandestine operations".

Oil Surpassed $71 A Barrel
Giovanni Staunovo, a commodity analyst for UBS, told UPI he wasn't seeing a weak greenback as driving the market, however. West Texas Intermediate for March delivery added 63 cents to $66.14/bbl at 1:17 p.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The Kremlin is actively looking at Britain's key gas and electricity supplies, Williamson added. In a few years time there will be eight million homes that would be dependent.

He said Moscow had been looking at critical infrastructure such as power stations and links transferring electricity across borders.

Did Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson leak secrets to divert attention from an old affair?

But Mr Williamson's comments on the potential for attacks on United Kingdom infrastructure echo earlier warnings from military leaders and security officials.

The Russian embassy later tweeted: "Some British politicians bear no responsibility for their words".

The warning comes as Mr Williamson aims to complete a defence review - called the Defence Modernisation Programme - by the summer.

Sabotage could come through a cyberattack, the targeting of underwater communications cables or even by launching a missile, he said.

On Monday the head of the Army said Britain needed to "keep up" with Putin's growing military strength or see our ability to take action "massively constrained".
