The Pacers are again near the top with two second-place votes and four for third place.

Several failed stadium sites delayed his consortium's efforts, with Beckham's team unable to find an agreeable place for a specially built venue.

Sealing planning permission for a home stadium proved a major stumbling block until Beckham's group finalised a project a year ago that will see a 25,000-seat arena built in Miami's urban core, while it is hoped the team can capitalise upon the area's sizable Latino population.

English football superstar David Beckham was officially awarded a Major League Soccer franchise in Miami Monday, but there was no immediate word on when the long-awaited team will kick off.

Nashville was recently awarded an expansion franchise, and when that team and Miami commence play it give MLS four franchises in the Southeast portion of the USA - with those clubs joining Orlando and Atlanta.

"Bringing an MLS franchise to Miami has been a hell of a journey".

The idea of the franchise coming to Miami began looking very real last spring, when Miami-Dade County commissioners approved a deal to sell Beckham almost three acres of county land for $9 million - the last parcel needed for the nine-acre site in the city's Overtown neighborhood, where the stadium is likely to be built.

"Welcome, Miami", MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. MLS officials said even then they hoped to announce the team's official inclusion into MLS last summer.

It took a few more months, and there's still plenty of questions.

Gimenez said the Miami ownership group - which includes David Beckham, local businessmen Jorge and Jose Mas, Sprint chairman Masayoshi Son and CEO Marcelo Claure, and entertainment mogul Simon Fuller - may consider adding parking as it applies for zoning at the site. I was in from day one. Soccer, at long last, is back in Miami. The league is set to choose from Sacramento, Cincinnati and Detroit for its 26th franchise sometime in 2018. Those teams are expected to have to pay an expansion fee of around $150 million. MLS' average attendance at matches has also risen almost 43 percent over that 12-year span.

Beckham, who won 115 England caps and also starred for the likes of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, had an option to purchase an MLS expansion franchise included in his contract when he joined Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.

The site is not far from downtown but the plan did not include any available parking, instead relying on the nearby Metrorail shuttle, buses, water taxis on the Miami River, and fans wanting to march en masse toward the stadium.
