The New York Times first reported on the study last week.

Tests were conducted by the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, which is based in New Mexico.

The report claimed that in 2014 EUGT put 10 monkeys in an air-tight chamber and exposed them to fumes from several cars, including a diesel-powered VW Beetle.

In 2015 VW admitted having fitted "cheat" devices in the USA that made its engines appear less polluting than they actually were.

Unbeknownst to the researchers, the Beetle used in the experiment was fitted with Dieselgate code, which allowed the auto to detect a laboratory emissions testing situation and reduce its output of harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Still, the study was deemed inconclusive and was never published. Further reports from German media outlets said on Monday that the research group also tested the effects of diesel exhaust on 25 people at the University of Aachen in Germany.

The German government also condemned the tests. "Mr. Steg has declared that he will assume full responsibility". "We're convinced the scientific methods chosen then were wrong". VW apologized on Twitter, adding that it "explicitly distances itself clearly from all forms of animal abuse". Animal testing contradicts our own ethical standards.

All three German carmakers have scrambled to distance themselves from the research body in question - the now defunct European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT) - and promised to launch internal investigations. It said it was investigating the work and background of the research group. The EUGT has been in liquidation since June 30, 2017. The study did not deliver a definitive result.

"We are conscious of our social and corporate responsibilities and are taking the criticism regarding the study very seriously".

In 2016, Hartman was sentenced to six months of house arrest in Chicago and two years of mental health probation. After getting out of jail only three days prior, Hartman was arrested again at about 1:30am on Sunday at O'Hare.

We are appalled by the nature and extent of the studies and their implementation.

The German government on January 29 condemned the experiments and Volkswagen sought to distance itself from them, with its chairman saying that "in the name of the whole board I emphatically disavow such practices".

Karmenu Vella, the European commissioner responsible for environmental matters, met with ministers from the nine offending countries in Brussels on Tuesday and said afterward that they had failed to present credible plans for reducing pollution.

"No effect could be detected" in humans who inhaled the gas during the research group's tests, Stuttgarter Zeitung reported, though the newspaper did not detail the nitrogen dioxide concentrations or exact length of exposure.

The E.U.G.T, which hired scientists to conduct studies rather than carrying out the research itself, shut down a year ago amid controversy over its work.

The BMW Group and Bosch have not yet issued an official statement.

Within just a few days, the news has splurged into one big PR disaster for the German vehicle giants, especially with the 2015 Volkswagon emissions test cheat scandal still fresh in the memories of consumers. At BMW, the only model left that's available with a diesel is the 3 Series.
