Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler slammed with new scandal

Volkswagen alleged to have rigged experiment with monkeys to show safe level of emissions German Carmakers Criticized for Emissions Research on Monkeys

Reports of experiments on human follow a New York Times report of tests on 10 monkeys in a US laboratory in 2014, in which monkeys inhaled diesel fumes from a VW Beetle.

According to a New York Times report, a company referred to by its German initials EUGT was formed by the car-maker trio in 2007 and commissioned tests on live mammals to prove the cleanliness of diesel engines.

Volkswagen apologised for the experiment this week, acknowledging "the misconduct and the lack of judgment" of research undertaken on behalf of auto companies.

"I'll do everything so that these events will be fully investigated, " Poetsch said in an emailed statement.

The German government has condemned some of that country's biggest carmakers, over media reports that say humans and monkeys were used in experiments to test the dangers of exhaust fumes.

Volkswagen's dieselgate scandal took a weird turn last week when the New York Times reported a lab in Albuquerque, New Mexico locked ten monkeys in a chamber and had them watch cartoons while exhaust fumes from a Beetle were piped into the compartment.

Volkswagen admitted using the software in 2015. They also do little to help the poor public perception of the technology under scrutiny for high pollution levels in many European cities. The goal of experiment was to find a demonstration that new diesel engines were not contaminants. "We are shocked by extension and implementation of study and condemn experiments in strongest terms", says Daimler explaining that firm had no influence on conducting experiment.

The company distanced itself from EUGT by saying that their approach contradicted their values and ethical principles.

The report is damaging for the entire industry, Bosch Chief Executive Volkmar Denner said, warning that a decline in demand for diesel could pose a threat to jobs.

It was commissioned by the European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT) - a group funded by German carmakers Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler.

"The Süddeutscher and both reported on Monday that a research group funded by the auto industry giants tested the effects of gas nitrogen dioxide - a component of vehicle exhaust - on "[25] healthy young persons".

The university compiled a report in 2016 that concluded the subjects showed no ill effect from the tests. The test, which was confirmed by Aachen University's research hospital, the site of the test, was allegedly to do with workplace safety and not related to the automotive industry. However, the spokesman pointed out they had received information that the ethics committee of Aachen University had approved the nitrogen dioxide study.

The German government said on Monday that any auto emissions testing on monkeys or people was unjustifiable.

"These tests on monkeys or even humans can not be justified ethically in any way", said Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert.

"They raise many critical questions for those were behind these tests - and these questions must urgently be answered". After subjecting them to this abuse, experimenters cut out samples of their lung tissue to check for inflammation.

On Monday Volkswagen said that some staff members, whom it did not identify, including some in its legal department, at the VW brand's technical development division and at Volkswagen of America, were aware of the tests at the time.

The Lower Saxony Minister of Economics and VW Supervisory Board Bernd Althusmann described the experiments as "absurd and inexcusable".

It said 10 were locked into airtight chambers for each test and given cartoons to watch.
