Russian Federation lost its second combat jet in Syria, after an Su-25 ground attack aircraft was shot down by rebels in the Idlib province.

Both Russia and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the pilot was killed after exchanging fire with the rebels.

United Kingdom based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the plane was downed on Saturday afternoon near the rebel-held town of Sreqeb.

Tharir al-Sham, a jihadist group spearheaded by the former Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for shooting down the plane, saying one of its fighters had scored a direct hit with a shoulder launched anti-aircraft missile.

The jet was a Sukhoi Su-25, a close air support aircraft designed in the 1970s. One of the armed men shouts: 'He is Russian'.

Rebel forces in Syria shot down a Russian fighter jet over the Idlib province on Saturday.

Russian Federation is a key ally of President Bashar Assad, and has been waging a military campaign on behalf of his forces since 2015.

Syria is in the process of carrying out an offensive against Islamist rebels in Idlib Province, where most of such groups are operating.

Syrian opposition activists say rebels have shot down a warplane in the north-west of the country, where government forces and their allies are advancing under the cover of intense airstrikes. The different Syrian sectors should shape that commission: the Government, the opposition, the civil society, the different ethnic and religious groups, women, experts on the Syrian issue and others, he said. The Russians said that some 30 rebels died in an attack in the area where the plane was downed.

A third rebel source said he was killed.

The SU-34 Fullback was first deployed to Syria in September 2015. Two months later, Turkey shot down a Russian warplane.
