'Abbas did not reject talks based on two-state solution'
05 February, 2018, 06:24
The Palestinian leadership has become increasingly frustrated with the American administration, particularly since President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel, in a break with decades of worldwide consensus that the city's fate should be decided in peace talks.
"Nikki Haley needs to shut up and realize that the Palestinian leadership is not the problem".
The comments made by Erekat, who is the Palestine Liberation Organization's secretary general, came in reaction to a recent speech Haley gave to the U.N.in which he claimed Haley called for the "overthrowing" of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, the Times of Israel reports. "If President Abbas demonstrates he can be that type of leader, we would welcome it".
"[The goal of Israel and the United States is to] undermine the Palestinian national project".
It would also be seen as a fatal blow to the two-state solution, already on life support following the White House's December recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The community is one of the 46 Bedouin communities in the central West Bank at-risk of forcible transfer because of the coercive environment exerted on them, including a "relocation" plan advanced by the Israeli authorities. The conditions it faces also represent those of many Palestinian communities, where a combination of Israeli policies and practices -including demolitions and restricted access to basic services, such as education - have created a coercive environment that violates the human rights of residents and generates a risk of forcible transfer.
The Palestinians, Erekat stressed, are determined to pursue diplomatic efforts at the UN Security Council and other global forums in response to the policies of the Trump administration.
After a long meeting on Saturday evening, the executive committee of the PLO said it had asked the Palestinian government to "begin devising plans to disengage from the Israeli occupation authorities at the political, security, economic and administrative levels".
Nevertheless, Erekat insisted that the Palestinians were not looking for a fight with the US. The U.S. administration is itself saying that it's not an honest broker in the peace process.
