Top officials from South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) have met with President Jacob Zuma, amid growing pressure for the 75-year old leader to step down as head of state.

This was to avoid him facing a motion of no confidence in Parliament, brought forward by the Economic Freedom Fighters, on February 22 as well as possible impeachment, the rules of which are set to be finalised before the joint rules committee's last house sitting for the term on March 15.

"The ANC's top six officials will meet Zuma this evening to discuss his exit", stated the report.

President Jacob Zuma will be the one to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, insisted ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule on Saturday.

He had supported his ex-wife and former African Union Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to replace him.

Zuma is not due to leave office until the 2019 elections.

Zuma narrowly survived a no-confidence vote in August, when some ANC lawmakers voted with the opposition.

The president has been beset by a series of corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing.

Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa is set to take over from Zuma, should he step down. The Democratic Alliance was unsuccessful in its bid to have the Sona postponed. The embattled Zuma told supporters at his 75th birthday bash in Soweto, Johannesburg a year ago that he would resign should the ANC ask him to do so.

According to the local IOL news website, party chairman Gwede Mantashe told worshippers at a church east of Johannesburg that they were meeting Zuma to consider options regarding his future as president of the country.

"That is why tonight we are meeting with President Zuma", said Mantashe to some applause in the St John Apostolic Faith Mission church on Sunday afternoon.

Lukhona Mnguni, political analyst at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said Zuma could take his chances and wait for the no-confidence motion rather than decide to resign.
