Jeremy Corbyn Says Labour Would Pardon And Apologise To Suffragettes

It's been 100 years since women won the right to vote.

After years of writing romance novels, Despard turned her hand to charity and suffrage when her husband died.

For many of them deliberately chose to be arrested and to go to jail to highlight the injustice they were fighting.

It was awarded by the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), the leading militant organisation campaigning for Women's suffrage at the time, and is tied to a green, white and purple ribbon (representing hope, purity and dignity), which were the colours of the organisation. But they still couldn't vote.

Half of young British women surveyed by the Fawcett Society did not believe they would live to see equal representation in parliament, the rights group - named after the moderate suffragist Millicent Fawcett - said on Tuesday.

A fitting tribute, according to her great-great-granddaughter Kate Barrat. "It was such a significant moment for women and this is the most interesting item for me because it is the real thing, it's what somebody, we don't know who for sure, would have been sent and had in their possession", he says.

In fact, there is probably a courageous woman human rights defender living at your doorstep.

The act widened the franchise to all men over 21 but only women over 30 who owned land or a home.

The writer in The Queen magazine said the suffragettes were "irresponsible" in forcing the vote on wives and mothers.

However the key part of the campaign was not voting in and of itself, but rather the focus it forced politicians to put on issues that affected women.

"The qualities in which their minds excel are those least required in politics; their strong points are wasted or harmful there".

The Nazis and their collaborators systematically murdered six million Jews, wiping out a third of world Jewry. Daniels said that using such terminology was tantamount to " Holocaust denial".

"I look forward to joining hundreds of female Parliamentarians, past and present, to celebrate this very special anniversary", May said ahead of the event.

"Somebody who says that he's had six children and never changed a nappy; somebody who says that even if you've been raped by your own father you couldn't choose to have a termination; I'm sorry, but I couldn't stay in a party led by someone like him", she told ITV's Good Morning Britain.

Prof June Purvis of the University of Portsmouth has collected many postcards printed with anti-suffrage messages and imagery.

Backbencher Jess Phillips said she would be thinking of murdered MP Jo Cox on the centenary, and revealed she sang a pro-suffragette song with colleague Anna Turley as they walked "arm in arm" to her memorial.

"In the early 20th century postcards were big business", says Prof Purvis. "It's a date worthy of commemoration and chance to reflect on how much progress has been made, but also an opportunity for women to get angry and use their voice to strive once more for that long eluded equality", she said.

"Without the other people underneath her, in particular her daughters, I think it would have never happened".

For Prof Purvis, one of the stand-out postcards shows a group of women, supposedly in the House of Commons, showing what a future with women in Parliament would be like.
