Google buys back Nest Labs, Alphabet's smart home unit

Alphabet rolls its Nest smart-home unit back into Google Google's hardware team absorbs Nest to co-develop products
Mandy Jefferson | 08 February, 2018, 12:28

This fits in line with the appearance of Nest on-stage at the October Made by Google event past year, talking about using Google's Machine Learning and Assistant in powering Nest products. They also confirmed that Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz will now report to Rick Osterloh, and that the company doesn't "anticipate any significant role reductions" (in other words, they're not planning to lay off a bunch of people as part of the merge).

Google's vision, however, of taking the lead in the smart home products market will point the company on a direct collision course with Apple and Amazon.

Google acquired Nest back in January 2014 for $3.2 billion and till now Nest was running independently. It just makes sense to be developing them together.

From the Google's Hardware devision, the company will produce more Pixel phones, Pixelbooks, Smart speakers and more in the future. Google is trying grew its own advancements before anybody else does - particularly Amazon. After doubling its hardware portfolio, Nest saw more sales in 2017 than in the previous two years combined. Its next product, Nest Hello, is a smart video doorbell that is scheduled for release in March. Fawaz said that Nest has shipped around 11 million products since its founding in 2011. Devices like the Google Home and Nest Cam should be co-developed under the same team, not in separate silos. A former Motorola executive, Osterloh took charge of all of Google's consumer devices, which includes Google Home smart speakers, Pixel smartphones and Chromecast streaming devices, in 2016.

A united front could be helpful in competing with the other ubiquitous digital helpers of today - Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri. Nest first created smart thermostats that used machine learning to help better regulate temperatures inside houses in order to save energy.
