Jaguar restarts D-type racer production
08 February, 2018, 12:24
Jaguar Classic is re-starting production of the famed D-type racer, which won the Le Mans 24 Hours in consecutive years from 1955 to 1957, 62 years after the last example was made.
Jaguar Classic is bringing a former classic, the D-Type, back to life.
Jaguar Land Rover's Classic division boss, Tim Hannig, said: "The Jaguar D-Type is one of the most iconic and attractive competition cars of all time, with an outstanding record in the world's toughest motor races". British luxury manufacturer Jaguar is building 25 units of the D-Type, a auto that was the victor of the Le Mans 24 Hours race three times between 1955 and 1957 and that was last built 62 years ago.
The first of these models will be shown at the Salon Retromobile in Paris today, with the remaining 24 customers able to choose between having a 1955-spec shortnose or a 1956-spec longnose body type. So there's no raised eyebrow upon hearing that some models were sold for as much as $21 million at auction as the D-Type is regarded as one of the most valuable and significant Jags of all time.
Found: 100-Million-Year Old Arachnid with a Tail Encased in Amber
This latest collection of finds ended up with two different research groups at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology. The spider lived on the islands of Myanmar - formerly Burma - during the mid-Cretaceous when Tyrannosaurus Rex ruled the planet.
It won the Le Mans 24 Hour race three times from 1955 to 1957, and also spawned the XKSS road vehicle - which incidentally was also recently revived in a limited production run. It follows the six missing Lightweight E-type models completed in 2014-15 and nine XKSS models built in 2017-18. Jaguar Classic is now stepping in and fulfilling the company's original production plan by creating 25 all-new, period-correct versions of the evocative sports vehicle. And it's just as spectacular today.
Engineering manager at Jaguar Classic Kev Riches says the projects helped prepare the team for the D-Type build.
The engineering prototype is the 1956 Longnose, identifiable by its extended hood, characteristic tail fin behind the driver's head, wide-angle cylinder head and quick-change brake calipers.
"Each one will be absolutely correct, down to the very last detail, just as Jaguar's Competitions Department intended".
