The Tigers were able to ink the commitment of standout Scotlandville defensive back Kelvin Joseph, who is likely to play cornerback for the Tigers next fall, as opposed to safety, due to the Tigers misses. But Alabama has been more of a DBU on the field as it has outranked LSU in pass defensive efficiency over the last three consecutive seasons.

With the Tide having lost the entire starting dime secondary from this past season, the 5-star Surtain, who is ranked as the nation's top cornerback and No. 11 overall prospect, was a must-have for the reigning national champions.

LSU led for the entirety of Patrick Surtain Jr.'s recruitment, except when it mattered most.

Rarely thrown at, Surtain made 17 tackles and had one interception in eight games as a senior for the Patriots, which won their fourth Class 5A state title in five years and finished the season ranked as high as fourth nationally in one of MaxPreps' polls. Surtain picked the Crimson Tide over Clemson, LSU and Miami. It was always going to be tough for Alabama to get the No. 1 class in the country because the Tide couldn't sign a full 25-member class.

LSU could still move into the top 10 as it successfully recruited Rummel wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase (6-2, 185) who is the no 67 prospect in the nation, and no. 12 wide receiver, the number 4 prospect in the state.

That could change, though, Nick Saban said in cryptic answer about the position Wednesday. The bad news was preceded by the announcement of Missouri cornerback Mario Goodrich, who declared for Clemson at 7:30 a.m.

LSU appears to be out of the running for No. 18 dual threat quarterback James Foster (6-3, 188) of Sidney Lanier High in Montgomery, Ala., which means LSU will not meet one of its goals for the Class of 2018, which was to sign a quarterback.

Foster, who is not ranked nationally and is No. 11 in Alabama, visited LSU on January 12, Alabama on January 19 and Florida State on February 1.

It looks like LSU will come in under 25, which means it would have space for a possible quarterback graduate transfer after spring practice when quarterbacks often chose to transfer.
