South Africa President Jacob Zuma (right) and his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa.

"The discussions [on Tuesday night] were constructive and lay the basis for a speedy resolution of the matter in the interests of the country and its people", Mr Ramaphosa said.

He informed the audience that Zuma indicated that he was standing firm and would not step down voluntarily.

At the centre of the talks was the future of the 75-year-old as head of state since he ended his ten-year mandate as ANC president.

Ramaphosa said direct talks were an opportunity to reach an agreement without spreading discord or division.

Mr Ramaphosa said that postponing a meeting on Wednesday of top ANC officials would "enable President Zuma and myself to conclude our discussions.in the coming days".

Opposition parties are demanding that a vote of no-confidence be held to remove him.

Meanwhile, the Neslon Mandela Foundation has weighted in to urge Zuma to resign.

Addressing investors at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town on Tuesday‚ just hours before Ramaphosa announced the postponement of the NEC meeting that would have decided Zuma's fate‚ Mashatile said Zuma would have been recalled from office if he did not step down.

"The president has requested the postponement due to certain developments which make it not conducive to successfully hold the sitting and deliver the SONA", it said.

A new date will be announced soon, said Mbete.

Marianne Merten CorrespondentPresident Jacob Zuma is under pressure.

Quite why it is proving so hard is still not entirely clear.

The best guess here is that Zuma, who is facing multiple corruption charges, may be looking for some sort of legal guarantees - although an amnesty is not an option in South Africa.

He made it sound as if "Zexit" was now inevitable.

The Democratic Alliance could not immediately confirm whether it would participate in the planned march.

His presidency has been dominated by an economic slowdown, record unemployment and allegations of corruption. In South Africa, it has become known as "state capture". Zuma and the Guptas deny any wrongdoing.

Then there is also the country's struggling economy, with the unemployment rate rising to about 28%.
