FTSE 100 rebounds after Wall Street comeback but jitters remain

Markets Right Now: European markets tumble at the bell Asia shares, US stock futures plunge; STI down 3.5%

More than £27bn has been lost off the value of London's blue-chip stocks as fears over interest rate hikes ripped through global markets. So are we heading for global turmoil? In Frankfurt, growth-sensitive stocks Volkswagen and BASF lost 3.8 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively.

Stock markets did indeed hit record highs in January.

According to IG's opening calls, the FTSE 100 will start the session 0.57 percent higher at 7,182 points.

The falls follow some good years for investors. The Hong Kong market rose 10% in the month: Brazil did even better, rising by 11%. In addition, the World Bank issued a bullish forecast as it looked ahead to 2018.

"The modestly higher sovereign yields and expected central bank rates reflect the recent acceleration in growth, they pose no serious threat to it [.] Scary charts coupled with strong adjectives on the front pages of the newspapers may deter spending a little for a day or two, but as long as the market settles down things should get back to normal quickly", said Kallum Pickering, senior United Kingdom economist at Berenberg. The Bank's president, Jim Yong Kim said, "The broad-based recovery in global growth is encouraging".

European markets have followed Asian markets lower on Tuesday as investors continued to dump shares. "In fact, that we have not had one in so long was odd".

The FTSE 100 and major European markets are all following the Asian and U.S. markets in a significant upward trend.

It is easy to think, 'So what? On Tuesday afternoon in Asia, futures that track major NY stock market indexes signaled a drop of about 1 percent.

Why did stock markets suddenly fall?

'A strong 2017 rally extending into January, low volatility, low interest rates, over-optimism and complacency, over-leverage and financial engineering, all coming to a head as investors react to the possibility of higher/faster interest rates with bond yields creeping higher to jeopardise the current market situation'. Federal Reserve will raise interest rates faster than expected due to a pick-up in wages. Oil was also drifting lower in response to rising USA crude outputs.

First the U.S., then the rest of the world...

The rise in the currency weighed on the FTSE's predominantly dollar-earning firms, with shares in heavyweight consumer staples British American Tobacco, Reckitt Benckiser and Unilever dropping 1.8 per cent to 3.2 per cent.

If confirmed, the agreement would end four months of political wrangling in Europe's largest economy, which has been without a new government after September's general election failed to produce a majority for one party.

"It's not going to be a two-day phenomenon", he added.

Is it the beginning of a global crash?

The stock had traded at close to £10.00 levels last summer.

It is always the bad days that capture the headlines.

However, Europe appeared to have avoided the worst of the share falls seen on Monday in the USA and earlier on Tuesday in Asia.

Among other key commodities, gold, rising 0.2 percent on the day, showed more modest gains than could have been expected at a time when investors pull money out of riskier assets. Dow swings were of up to 1,000 points.

Away from the top tier, the FTSE 250 Index was also suffering, dropping more than 2pc or 413.41 points to 19,279.74.

It is a cliché, but saving and investing is a marathon, not a sprint.

Will this have long term impact?

It meant that nearly £50bn of value was erased following a £27bn hit in the previous session, while other major European bourses fell in similar fashion.
