The digital community knew him as John Perry Barlow, the co-founder, in 1990, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that sought to protect digital rights in a new information age, as well as to proactively define as positively as possible a roadmap of guidelines and mores in order to help shape a new era that would inevitably touch every human across the earth.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group Barlow co-founded, posted on the website and said Barlow "passed away quietly in sleep".

The Wyoming native met Dead founding member Bob Weir when he was 15.

It is hard to underestimate the value John Barlow and the EFF had in shaping the internet as we use it today and the EFF will no doubt continue their activism in regards to supporting an open internet.

Born in Wyoming on October 3, 1947, Barlow graduated with a degree in comparative religion from Wesleyan University.

String Cheese Incident (SCI) songwriter John Perry Barlow (R) speaks during a news conference which addressed the Colorado band's lawsuit recently filed against Ticketmaster August 11, 2003 in New York City.

Six years later, Barlow outlined his vision for the future of online communications in "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace", which paints a Utopian vision for the possibility of the internet. The article is regarded as highly influential on the ethos of the internet and Barlow stood by his words two decades on, despite accusations of naivety and the creeping encroachment of governments into the digital sphere.

She went on, "He always saw the Internet as a fundamental place of freedom, where voices long silenced can find an audience and people can connect with others regardless of physical distance".

In an apparent reference to Barlow's idealistic early work, Cohn denied he was "a straw man for a kind of naive techno-utopianism that believed that the internet could solve all of humanity's problems without causing any more". "He made a conscious decision to focus on the latter", she said. He was also part of one of the board meeting with whistleblower Edward Snowden to investigate reporter Glenn Greenwald.

The Grateful Dead fans best know Barlow as the poet behind songs like "Cassidy", "Hell in a Bucket", "Estimated Prophet", "Black-Throated Wind", "The Music Never Stopped", "Looks Like Rain", "Mexicali Blues" and "Throwing Stones".
