Luger Erin Hamlin will carry US flag into opening ceremony

Erin Hamlin Selected As Team USA's Flag Bearer For PyeongChang 2018 Erin Hamlin named Team USA flag bearer for PyeongChang Opening Ceremony

Luger Erin Hamlin has been named Team USA's flag bearer for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

This news did not sit well with Shani Davis, who is similarly worthy as a two-time gold medalist and the first black athlete to win gold in an individual Winter Olympic event. It wasn't the first time she made history - in 2009, she became the first US woman to win a world championship in the luge.

Davis and US luge veteran Erin Hamlin were the favorites to carry the flag for Team USA at Friday's opening ceremonies, but when a team vote left the two deadlocked, a protocol called for a coin toss to break the tie.

It had already been agreed prior to the vote by the US Olympic Committee that a tie would be broken by a coin toss.

I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event. "No problem. I can wait until 2022", he wrote on February 8.

The coin toss, according to the Associated Press, came after a 4-4 tie between Davis and Hamlin.

"In the tweet, Davis included the hashtag "#BlackHistoryMonth2018", leading some to believe he was hinting that race was a factor in the decision.

U.S. Speedskating communications director Matt Whewell did not comment on Davis' tweet, but spoke to the skater's impressive Games track record.

Team USA have acted "dishonourably" by tossing a coin to decide who would be their Winter Olympics flag bearer, a double gold medallist has claimed. "I took a different approach to competing and the last four years have been some of my most successful". The two were informed Wednesday night that Hamlin had won.

"I think they're going to be really glad that they made that decision", Hamlin said. "I slide - that's what I do. Walking out in front of a lot of people and even more watching from home, hoping to not trip over my own feet or drop the flag is going to be way more nerve-wracking".

Davis has also always been outspoken, criticizing the USOC for the suits the team used during the 2014 Games and how NBC portrayed him in the previous Olympics.
