DAY 0 RECAP | Winter Olympics begin with figure skating, freestyle skiing

Japan's world champion Yuzuru Hanyu should be favourite to pick up the men's event but a niggling ankle injury may give United States teenager Nathan Chen a shot at gold.

"I was a mess", Hamilton continued, although he rebounded nicely to win gold. "That's the best thing abou tthe team event". This is why this is a team event.

Perhaps that's what ailed Chen Friday in his Olympic debut.

Early Olympic jitters and the unusual challenge of having to compete in the morning in South Korea played havoc with the men's short program earlier in the day, with several top skaters failing to land key jumps, including Canada's Patrick Chan.

During the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia's Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxin Trankov won the gold medal for pairs skating.

But Lucy said that for her, the Olympics symbolize the idea that "you can really do whatever you want, no matter what part of the world you are from".

The men and women will begin their Olympic journeys with the team event, similar to that of gymnastics, in which the singles, pairs and ice dancing skaters compete for points as a whole.

French ice dancer Guillaume Cizeron, a two-time world champion and four-time European champion, told a news conference at the European championships that the Olympics were not the "most usual" schedule.

It's a moment Chen was all but groomed for. His contribution to the team event is over. Wagner's close friend, Adam Rippon, was expected to compete in the short program Thursday evening.

Starring in team competition on Friday, the 18-year-old phenom managed just a fourth-place finish for his short program, and even that placement came amid an uncharacteristically sloppy appearance on ice. Only the top five among the eight countries to qualify after all four entrants have performed their short programs advance to the free skate, where the medals will be settled. Canada leads with 17 points, followed by the United States (14) and Japan and the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation (13 each). Then it was back to the athletes village for some oatmeal, and a short rest before hopping on the bus back to the Gangneung Ice Arena for a 10 a.m. competition.

Chen avoided direct comment when asked if Hanyu's absence from competition gave him an advantage. He will compete in the men's individual round starting February 16. "We're down to the minute and we're going to use every minute that we can get".

"A Korea Skating Union spokesman said the words "Dokdo, last night" will be erased".

"That definitely helped me as a kid and allowed me to adapt to different styles of skating, from hip-hop to contemporary to very classical ballet as well", Chen said, adding with a chuckle, "and it was nice to have other boys in the class with me so I didn't feel left out".

Chen hinted at the same.

The three-time world champion rose at 5 a.m., grabbed a coffee on the way to the bus for a 7 a.m. practice. "I have some insecurities now that I didn't have before, but I'm able to work on it and move forward because I've shifted my focus and my attention to my faith instead of myself". "But with the time change and everything, it's not a big deal".

Chen said he needed time to go over what went wrong.

Dear, sweet Nathan Chen fell on one of his quads and generally racked up errors throughout most of his program. On the NBC broadcast, he said he was disappointed with his performance and because he felt he "let the team down".

It was simply a 40-minute practice session on the rink designated for that goal, with a low ceiling and fluorescent lights, tucked just below the Gangneum Ice Arena, where Chen and Rippon will make their Olympic debuts later this week in the team event. They cheered for me.
