Human eggs grown in a lab for the first time

Hopes growing after fertility treatment breakthrough Breakthrough as human eggs developed in the lab for first time

Currently, to preserve their fertility ovarian tissue is taken before treatment and frozen for later implantation.

Researchers are hopeful that this discovery is a first step toward helping girls diagnosed with childhood cancer keep their fertility in adulthood. In the case of re-implanted tissue, "the big worry, and the big risk, is can you put cancer cells back", said Stuart Lavery, a consultant gynaecologist at Hammersmith Hospital, who was not involved in the study.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh say that this new technique could lead to leaps in preserving the fertility of kids undergoing cancer treatment, the BBC reports.

JERUSALEM • United States President Donald Trump told Israel yesterday that it too would need to make "significant compromises" for peace with the Palestinians, even as the Palestinians accused one of his Middle East envoys of bogging down diplomacy with what they see as pro-Israel bias.

Ten women receiving caesareans agreed to let the scientists remove a small portion of their ovaries. Plus, not all of them were the super-young eggs that had to be brought entirely through development; some had the advantage of being slightly more mature, meaning that scientists had to only partially grow them. At the end of each step, follicles, and eventually eggs, that had successfully matured further were moved to the following step.

A technique developed by researchers in NY and Edinburgh may change that.

This exact balance that leads to maturity of the eggs within a females body had hitherto never been replicated in the laboratory. The final cells were large eggs with 23 unpaired chromosomes, ready to fuse with a sperm cell containing a complementary set.

Previously, the feat was achieved in mice eggs to produce live offspring. "The composition of human tissue is quite different, and is not straightforward". "We are now working on optimizing the conditions that support egg development in this way and studying how healthy they are", Telfer said. "This is a concern", said Prof Telfer.

The next step now is seeing if these mature eggs can be fertilised in a healthy and safe way, for which the team at Edinburgh will have to obtain a licence from the relevant authorities.

In theory, this means the eggs would be ready for fertilization and creating life.

However, this approach still needs plenty of further work and refinement before it can be used.

"But this work is at an early stage so it's not yet clear whether it might be useful for people in the future".

Still, the researchers are buoyed by the success of these initial experiments. "It might be of interest to test the developmental potential of these eggs in culture to blastocyst stage, by attempting IVF".

There has been a cautious welcome for the news from one of Ireland's leading fertility experts.
