Last week, 43 states had high patient traffic for the flu, up from 42, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

"There might be a second wave of influenza B infections", she said.

"Reducing the amount of people touching salt shakers, pepper shakers, knives, forks, plates; we will go all disposable".

Experts also reminded people that they can not get the flu from the flu shot. And it's the ninth consecutive week the flu has been widespread across the state. In the Bay Area, many hospitals called in extra staff to cover the deluge of sick patients, or canceled elective surgeries to free up resources.

"Unfortunately, flu can spread rapidly in communal settings like classrooms and nursing homes, but no one is immune from the flu", Dr. Box said.

A third pediatric death in New York City has been confirmed by the NYC Health Department, officials said Friday.

Most people who died had underlying health problems or were elderly; one child younger than 4 was among the victims, the report shows. However, it declined to release any details, including the age of the child.

This year's flu is also of a nastier caliber and has put more people in the hospital than usual.

"It is not too late to get your flu shot", said Frank Kruppa, Tompkins County's Public Health Director.

There have been 51 deaths in Georgia with 11 of those here in our area - within 100 miles of each other. "We want to protect our patients, and the community from getting the flu". Another child in the city died in January, according to city and state health officials.

On a more serious note, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also published a neat, easy-to-follow table to distinguish the two illnesses, which you can check out below. Based on a recent Canadian report, the effectiveness against B strain viruses is estimated to be about 55%. Meaning there are even more families now devastated by flu.

While the H3N2 continues to dominate this season, there are increasing cases of B viruses and the H1N1 strains. Randy Bergen, clinical lead for Kaiser Permanente's flu vaccination program in Northern California.

Although this year's flu vaccine is far from ideal, experts urge people to get it if they haven't yet.

Another factor could prolong this year's flu season: the Olympics.

The study looked at the number of deaths attributed to flu in the United States and Mexico between 1997 and 2014, and cross-referenced date of birth. That could set off a brand new surge here after the games end. Schuchat said those groups needn't wait for laboratory confirmation before being treated with an antiviral drug.
