A Jailbreaker Was Allegedly Behind Apple's IBoot Source Code Leak

iOS 11.3 will let iPhone users switch off Apple's performance throttling 'feature' dmca/2018-02-07-Apple.md at master · github/dmca · GitHub

Apple has issued a takedown notice to GitHub after the source code for the iBoot component of iOS was leaked and posted on the code-sharing website.

iOS is the software that powers the iPhone and iPad. "[iBoot] is responsible for ensuring trusted boot operation of Apple's ioS software".

The person took the iBoot source code - and additional code that has yet to be widely leaked - and shared it with a small group of five people.

Security researchers and hackers are likely to study the code, to see whether there are any flaws in it that might make unauthorised access possible, he added. That employee was apparently encouraged by friends from the Jailbreaking community to pull source code and internal tools from Apple's servers. Sure, security measures on current versions of iOS may provide protection from most, but pouring over lines of code could give hackers insights into vulnerabilities and potential weak spots that hackers were heretofore unaware of.

According to Apple, 93% of its users are using iOS 10 or above.

"Old source code from three years ago appears to have been leaked, but by design the security of our products doesn't depend on the secrecy of our source code", Apple said in a statement, as reported by Mac Rumors. "But the leak of this source code is proof that no environment or OS is infallible, and application protection from within the application itself is crucial, especially for business-critical, data-sensitive applications", says Carter.

Human eggs grown in a lab for the first time
This exact balance that leads to maturity of the eggs within a females body had hitherto never been replicated in the laboratory. The final cells were large eggs with 23 unpaired chromosomes, ready to fuse with a sperm cell containing a complementary set.

"In fact, this leak will provide better insight into how secure iOS devices really are". However, it being an inherent software engineering process where existing codes have always originated or have evolved from codes in the past, hacking or such misadventure owing to the leak can't be ruled out entirely.

That Apple has been quick to seek removal of the code from GitHub is also proof enough how important the code is for the company. Apple used the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to force GitHub to take the code down, but in doing so, basically admitted that the code was genuine.

Fortunately, numerous risks associated with the leak have been mitigated.

Though the code is for the iOS 9, some of the parts can be found in the iOS 11, notes The Verge.

That said, there are many who are claiming this to be the biggest leak ever in the history of iOS or even Apple.
