Thousands of glittering drones filled the night skies of PyeongChang at the tech-savvy 2018 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on Friday, impressing Olympic viewers worldwide.

The performance requires three employees to monitor the drones, and Olympic volunteers to help set them up.

And last night, for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, they soared to new heights in an impressive light show blending technology and art. The athletes, dignitaries, and spectators at the stadium in Pyeongchang never got to see the drone show.

The light show used Intel's Shooting Star drones, which were also featured in Lady Gaga's Super Bowl halftime show previous year, and at Intel's CES keynote back in January. This system allows large numbers of unmanned quadcopters to fly in a prescribed way.

The run included a nice dish from point guard Cassius Winston to Kenny Goins inside, Winston's seventh assist of the night. Two ranked teams will get together out of the Big Ten with the Michigan State Spartans taking on the Purdue Boilermakers .

Each drone weighs about as much as a volleyball and is fitted with LEDs that can beam any shape with 4 billion color combinations.

A record-setting 1,218 drones shot into the sky and traveled to a nearby ski slope, first taking on the shape of a moving snowboarder and later rearranging themselves into the iconic interlocking five Olympic rings. The added numbers just increase the resolution and quality of the image.

"During the Ceremony, POCOG made the decision to not go ahead with the show because there were too many spectators standing in the area where the live drone show was supposed to take place", according to a statement from the Olympic organizing committee, Recode reported.

Intel's drones can fly for around 20 minutes and of course, exterior factors, such as crosswinds and low temperatures can affect the overall flight time. We would greatly appreciate it, if you would consider the offers of our advertisers or would buy your next drone or drone accessories through one of our partners such as DJI, Parrot, Yuneec or retailers such as Amazon, B&H, BestBuy or eBay.
