Asma Jahangir was a very prominent Pakistani social activist espousing the cause of peace between India and Pakistan. We shall B announcing date of funeral soon. "We are waiting for our relatives to return to Lahore", her daughter Munizae Jahangir said in a tweet.

She also remained the special rapporteur of the UN Commission on Extrajudicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions from 1998-2004 and was the special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief of the UN Commission on Human Rights since 2004.

The premier termed her demise as a great loss for legal fraternity.

Her first foray into politics was in 1969, when she participated in a women's march to the residence of the governor of Punjab and clashed with the police. It is an irreparable loss.

She often had a tempestuous relation with the Pakistani state.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of veteran lawyer Asma Jahangir.

She faced death threats, beatings and imprisonment to win landmark human rights cases while standing against dictators. Pakistan has lost its most fearless crusader and the human rights movement its tallest leader.

"Asma Jehangir's death is a loss of a strong voice for the marginalised and oppressed".
