Zuma's future in Ramaphosa's hands

She called him by his clan names before warning that "all hell is about to break loose" as his African National Congress party leadership successor Cyril Ramaphosa continues to map out a smooth transition for Zuma to leave office as soon as possible.

The rand, which has tended to strengthen on signs that Zuma could step down before his second term as president ends next year, rose yesterday as investors increased bets that Ramaphosa would be able to unseat the embattled president.

"We should handle these discussions that are now under way with care and objective, ensuring that we put the interests of South Africans first", he said.

The ongoing impasse over Zuma's resignation led to the cancellation of a series of public events last week, including the annual State of the Nation address on Thursday. The ANC is running on an anti-corruption ticket. The demonstrations would have been timed to coincide with a parliamentary vote of no-confidence on February 22.

And there is evidence that Ramaphosa's promise to clean up corruption is being fulfilled.

But instead of a mid-week session of the ANC's 80-strong national executive committee at which Zuma's fate was to be sealed, the party was thrown into disarray when Ramaphosa took the reins and sat down with Zuma to sort out an exit strategy with the least amount of fuss, damage and delay.

The report stated that Zuma and ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa are secretly negotiating the deal. It is Madiba's example that should inform our approach to the tasks that we must undertake.

Outside the church Ramaphosa told a throng of awaiting journalists: "They were praying for us and they were praying that we should have wisdom, have total commitment to the people of South Africa and that is what we were praying for".

"The successful resolution of this matter has significant consequences for the country and for the African National Congress".

Sunday newspapers reported that Zuma was negotiating, among other things, an assurance that the state will take care of his legal fees, security for his family and immunity from prosecution.

"It is the interests of you, our people, that must be put first, and not the interests of anyone else", he said. Malema asked. "Why do you entrust your future in the hands of people who sold us out before?"

'We all know and anticipate that they are dealing with the current issue that is facing our country, Faiez Jacobs, the party's provincial secretary, told eNCA television. "That we will make sure of".

"In defence of Madiba's legacy, we will continue to wage a relentless war on corruption and mismanagement of the resources of our country". The occasion marked the first time Mandela addressed South Africans after 27 years in prison for opposing apartheid.

The #Mandela 100 rally is set to kick off at the Grand Parade at 2pm.
