Prince Henrik of Denmark, the husband of Queen Margrethe who was famous for his public unhappiness at never being named king, has died at the age of 83.
The prince, who returned to the Fredensborg Castle only today from hospital in the hope of spending his final hours with his family, died quietly in his sleep with Queen Margrethe and his sons Princes Frederik and Joachim by his side, a statement from the family said.
"The Prince was surrounded by Her Majesty The Queen and their two sons", the statement continued.
He was born Henri Marie Jean Andre Count de Laborde de Monpezat in Talence, southwest France.

By the time Margrethe acceded to the throne in 1972, the couple had two young children: Prince Frederik, born in 1968, and Joakim, born in 1969. She is said to have accepted her husband's decision.
Henrik had his fair share of engagements and patronages, as well as accompanying the queen on state visits and other functions. He published several poetry collections, some illustrated by the queen, as well as books on cookery and his memoirs.
