Slow eating could stop people putting on weight, study finds

The study showed that 21.5% of people who took their time over their meals had been diagnosed with obesity.

The surveys included questions on eating and sleeping habits, including a self-assessment of how fast the participants ate food, how soon they went to bed after dinner, and the frequency with which they snacked at night.

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, a ratio of weight-to-height used to determine whether a person falls within a healthy range.

Referring to the study's methods, however, he warned that relying on the participants themselves to score whether they eat slowly or quickly was "considerably subjective" and may skew the data.

The results revealed that compared with those who eat quickly, those who ate at a normal speed were 29% less likely to be obese, rising to 42% of those who ate their food slowly. Just over half of participants changed their eating speed over the course of the study. And when compared with fast eaters, normal-speed eaters and slow eaters had reductions in waist circumference of 0.21cm and 0.41cm respectively, the authors found.

Eating within 2 hours of going to sleep and snacking after dinner for 3 or more times a week were found to elevate BMI levels, yet skipping breakfast was not reflected in the levels of BMI. "The control of eating speed may therefore be a possible means of regulating body weight and preventing obesity, which in turn reduces the risk of developing non-communicable diseases".

A research team in Japan set out to analyze the effects of eating speed on obesity - defined as BMI greater than 25 in Japan - by asking over 59,000 Japanese men and women with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes to rate their own eating speed as fast, normal or slow.

Slow and steady wins the race, especially when it comes to eating.

In a study published in the BMJ Open, researchers analyzed data from nearly 60,000 people in Japan with type 2 diabetes who came in for medical appointments between 2008 and 2013.

Want to lose weight and do not want to diet and exercise, try eating slow.

The participants of the research study had regular check-ups from 2008 till 2013.

Observational studies can demonstrate links between factors such as eating speed and obesity, but they cannot prove that one factor (such as eating quickly) directly causes another (such as obesity). Next time you consider a weight loss program make sure your brain doesn't hold you back. "The speed at which a lot of people wolf down their food is undeniably a contributor to obesity", he said (via The Guardian).

They believe that fast eaters weigh in higher than their slow counterparts as it takes around 20 minutes for the brain to receive the message is the stomach is full.

Katarina Kos-an obesity researcher-Exeter Medical School said that similar research needs to be conducted in non-diabetic people for learning the potential of the diabetes medication in weight loss or gain.
