Amazon-owned footwear seller Zappos already laid off around 30 people previous year, while last March, the parenting product subsidiary Quidsi that runs Diapers.com and other sites, cut more than 250 jobs.

As of Monday, the company said it had more than 3,900 job openings in Seattle, and since 2010, it has increased its headcount to more than 40,000 people from 5,000. According to its most recent quarterly earnings report, the company has upped its global workforce by 66 percent over the previous year. Its consumer units include its retail and marketplace businesses, and its food delivery service Amazon Restaurants. A report surfaced in December that Amazon sharply cut down hiring, a first sign of its rapid expansion beginning to slow.

Amazon acknowledged the cuts but did not give more specific numbers, saying only that it is making head count adjustments across the company, "small reductions in a couple of places and aggressive hiring in many others". For the employees affected, the company works trying to find new roles in areas where hiring is taking place.

This announcement does not appear to be having an impact on Amazon's current search for a second headquarter location.

In a rare cutback, Amazon is reportedly laying off hundreds of corporate employees at its Seattle headquarters. And a year ago, Quidsi, the subsidiary behind Diapers.com and other sites, cut more than 250 jobs.

"Our 2017 projections for Alexa were very optimistic, and we far exceeded them", said Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder and chief executive, in a statement earlier this month. Amazon also had the smallest number of open positions from August to December of past year, making it the slowest hiring four-month period for Amazon in King County, according to CNBC. Officials say that move is expected to cost upwards of five billion dollars and bring along with it some 50- thousand jobs.

The process of notifying employees has already started, the source said.
