Although the Cupertino-based company reportedly won't introduce too many features in the next major update to its mobile operating system, iOS 12, choosing instead to focus on reliability and improving performance, it is supposedly still hard at work and developing new features for future iOS updates.

That routine, combined with the fact that Apple opted long ago to make those major updates free to install for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners, has helped maintain excitement around iOS in general. Hopefully they will be able to spread out its feature updates into steady point releases to allow adequate time for testing in order to prevent the same fallout experienced during the iOS 11 release.

Complaints about bugs have persisted pretty much since it was released, despite lengthy beta testing programs for developers and the public.

The rethink sees the company bowing to critics who claim iOS 11 is rife with bugs and design inconsistencies.

So even if Google (googl) and Android manufacturers such as Samsung (ssnlf) often beat Apple to the punch when it came to releasing new features, such as multitasking or predictive typing, Apple devotees could at least say that their platform would do it right when it got round to doing it.

The change could lead to more polished software update and less bugs. iOS 11 hasn't been flawless so far, for starters, with customers having to contend with autocorrect bugs, messages arriving out of order, and the calculator app misbehaving.

Thoughts on Apple's new approach to developing iOS and macOS updates? As per the report, the features that have been pushed to 2019 include a redesigned home screen, updates apps like Mail, and some reported tweaks in the Photos app. Thus, to ensure that the quality is maintained, Apple is changing its iOS release cycle strategy.

SVP of software development Craig Federighi announced the new direction to his team last month. It may also integrate Animojis into FaceTime, letting people put virtual faces over themselves during video calls. According to Bloomberg, you can expect better parental controls with detailed stats for parents, more granular settings for "Do Not Disturb", a new Stocks app and a way to invoke Siri in the iOS search bar.

While these no doubt sound exciting, it also means some of the highly-rumored features could be delayed.

Bloomberg reported that new features, such as a revamped home screen, will not be coming in 2018. Does a software update with a bevy of new features excite you, or a stable release with relatively lesser new features?
