Williamson top-scored with 72 from 46 balls and opener Martin Guptill contributed 65 as the Black Caps battled to a tight victory over England.

England's hopes of qualifying for the Trans-Tasman Tri Series T20 final took a blow as they were beaten by New Zealand by 12 runs in the 4th match.

Williamson shared in a second wicket stand of 82 with opener Martin Guptill, who hit 65 in 40 balls, as the Kiwis posted 196/5 in their 20 overs.

New Zealand s move to shore up the batting also paid off as former Hong Kong worldwide Mark Chapman made a useful cameo of 20 off 13 on his New Zealand debut.

The chase was plucky and entertaining, Alex Hales sprinting to 47 and Dawid Malan reaching 59, but it ultimately amounted to an enjoyable, doomed game of catch-up.

Dawid Malan (59 off 40) blazed away at the end before spinner Mitchell Santner (2-29) did his regular thing to entice a false stroke, then Trent Boult charged in to skittle Chris Jordan and Liam Plunkett in successive deliveries to clinch it.

New Zealand can now secure a spot in the tri-series final with a win over Australia at Eden Park on Friday. They face New Zealand in Hamilton on Sunday, two days after the Black Caps tackle Australia, who have already qualified for the final.

Rashid though came back strong in the 14th over when he had both Guptill and Colin de Grandhomme (0) caught in the deep with the latter held brilliantly by Chris Jordan (1-34) at long off.

England started brightly in reply before the consistent loss of wickets stifled progress, meaning the tourists fell 12 runs short. They are not as proficient at T20 as they are at one-day internationals, but even in the absence of a number of key players, they should be so much better...

"The team were great, we did know how the wicket would play and we were able to build partnerships throughout".

"You always want more runs, you always train hard, that's the focus", he said.

Williamson was relieved after a recent lack of form in T20 cricket to make a Man of the Match contribution.

"We were just off with our skills. We probably didn't bowl as well as we could have and Guptill and Williamson put us under a lot of pressure", he said. We did not get the cameos in the middle either.

"They were tough fielding conditions but the way they bowled at the death, they stepped up to the mark today".

"We need a favour from Australia to beat New Zealand - we will see what happens".
