Samsung may reduce OLED production due to poor iPhone X sales

Samsung to Slash OLED Panel Production as iPhone X Demand Disappoints Report Samsung shares take a hit as iPhone X sales slump

Samsung has been a top choice for Apple when it comes to OLED displays, with the Korean company looking to continue supplying the components for new iPhones this year as well.

Samsung did not immediately respond to our request for comment and Nikkei's report did not cite specific sources.

According to Nikkei Samsung will be making OLED panels for less than 20 million iPhones, 30 million less than what the initial goal was.

Samsung has not decided its production target for the June quarter, but the company envisions further cutbacks in the second quarter.

Apple's struggle with the iPhone X is affecting production of other parts as well, bringing down memory-chip prices.

Samsung is Apple's sole supplier of OLED screens and manufactured them for the 10th anniversary iPhone X.

Evidence is mounting that the iPhone X is a bust.

With new aerodynamic packages in place for Daytona, that rear bumper - particularly the left-rear - became the lightning rod. He even had a lucky penny of his own, which he traded a young fan for earlier this week at Daytona International Speedway.

Samsung isn't the only Apple OLED display provider to be hit by falling shares either.

The latest report additionally says that the bad news may not end there. The company is reportedly looking at Chinese and other customers to make up the difference. Last week, Apple informed developers that all new apps submitted to the App Store must support the iPhone X's edge-to-edge display.

Flexible OLED allows device makers more leeway in design but has been used mostly for premium models as it is more expensive than the rigid counterpart. According to analysts, the decline in iPhone X production is due to lower demand.

Of course, "weak demand" for iPhone X doesn't necessarily translate to disappointment within Apple.

US-based JL Warren Capital is predicting shipments of just 25 million units.

That's in stark contrast to a year ago, when some believed Apple would experience an iPhone X 'super cycle, ' triggered by a backlog of iPhone owners looking to upgrade to newer models.
