Samsung defines the PM1643 as "the industry's largest capacity Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) solid state drive". "Managing all the DRAM and flash with a single controller is almost impossible within the required thermal envelope of a 2.5" device, so Samsung spread the task out among nine different controllers.

All of that storage is enough for 5,700 full HD movies at 5GB apice, the company says.

Samsung a prominent provider of advanced memory technology has just announced the world's largest-capacity solid state drive (SSD) with a whopping 30.72 terabyte (TB) storage space.

Samsung is actively selling the drives, but it has not listed pricing. One such advancement is the highly efficient controller architecture, which made it possible to include nine controllers from previous drives in a single package. This is also the first time that an SSD has integrated TSV DRAM units in it.

Brita Sigourney takes the bronze medal in women's halfpipe
Like his team-mate, Kripps said it took a few moments for him to realise that they had clocked the same time as the Germans. Drew scored 90.80 on her final run to slip past Sigourney only to have Sigourney, the next skier down, put up a 91.80.

Samsung's PM1643 drive uses Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology to interconnect 8GB DDR4 chips. The capacity of the drive is attributed to 32 NAND Flash packages combined together.

As per Samsung's blog, this drive is based on Samsung's V-NAND technology with 64-layer and 3-bit 512-gigabit (Gb) chips and offers the drive offers 30.72 terabyte (TB), twice the capacity and performance of the previous 15.36TB high-capacity line-up introduced in March 2016. The SAS interface sports 12 GB/s random reading speeds, 400,000 IOPS, and writing speeds of up to 1,700 MB/second. By way of comparison, the aforementioned 860 EVO tops out at a 4TB model, so there's still a mountain to climb before such Herculean capacities trickle down to the High Street. These specifications are four times the random read performance and three times as fast as the average SATA SSD. What's more is that with the SSD Samsung is offering a warranty of five years.

That's 40,000/50,000 R/W IOPS by the way and a mean time between failures of two million hours. Samsung said it has started manufacturing "initial quantities" of the 30.72TB variant in January, but will expand the lineup with smaller capacity variants, from 800GB to 15.36TB, so there will be plenty of choices for every pocket. As Samsung executive VP of memory sales Jaesoo Han said in a press statement, the company will "continue to move aggressively in meeting the shifting demand toward SSDs over 10TB". But new biggest-ever storage components like this are always trailblazers, and create downward pressure on prices in the consumer market.
